Road bike guide: what to know before you buy

Race bike, endurance bike or aluminium classic: in this guide you will learn how the types of road bike differ, which model suits you and what to look for when buying.

Race or endurance: which type of rider are you?

A road bike is designed for speed and efficiency on tarmac: a light frame, narrow tyres and a drop bar with several hand positions. Within the category, however, there are clear differences.

Race bikes such as the SuperSix EVO or the CAAD14 have a stretched, sporty position and direct handling. Endurance bikes such as the Synapse are slightly more upright and more comfortable, ideal for long rides, sportives and riders who want to cover many kilometres in a relaxed way.

What to look for when buying

The right frame size

On a road bike in particular, size determines comfort and efficiency. You will find the manufacturer's size recommendation below the description on every product page. If you are between two sizes, just get in touch and we will help you choose.

Geometry

A race geometry with a low handlebar is fast and direct but requires some flexibility. An endurance geometry takes strain off your back and neck. If you mostly ride long distances, the Synapse is often the better choice.

Shifting: mechanical or electronic

Mechanical groupsets such as Shimano 105 are reliable and affordable. Electronic groupsets such as Shimano 105 Di2, Ultegra Di2 or SRAM Rival and Force AXS shift precisely at the push of a button and need hardly any adjustment.

Wheels and tyres

High-quality wheels are one of the most effective upgrades. Wider tyres from 28 mm roll hardly any slower but are much more comfortable. Many wheels are tubeless ready. However, the bikes are delivered with inner tubes from the factory, even when tubeless ready is stated.

How much does a good road bike cost?

The price range is wide. As a rough guide:

Frequently asked questions about road bikes

What is the difference between a race and an endurance road bike?

A race bike has a stretched, low position for maximum efficiency and direct handling. An endurance bike is slightly more upright and more comfortable, ideal for long distances and riders who want to spare their back and neck.

Road bike or gravel bike?

If you mainly ride on tarmac and want to go fast, a road bike is the right choice. If you also want to ride gravel and forest tracks, a gravel bike is more versatile.

Aluminium or carbon?

Carbon is lighter and can be tuned for stiffness and comfort. Aluminium is more robust and more affordable. A good aluminium road bike like the CAAD14 can easily hold its own against carbon bikes.

Which frame size do I need?

That depends on your height and inseam. You will find the manufacturer's size recommendation below the description on every product page. If you are between two sizes, our team is happy to advise you.

Can I build my own road bike?

Yes, the CAAD14 is also available as a frameset. That way you can choose groupset, wheels and components exactly the way you want.

Can I lease a road bike?

Yes, you can lease a road bike as a company bike through your employer. All details and our partners are on our bike leasing page.
