Cannondale: innovation from Connecticut
From the first aluminium frame to the Lefty and the Topstone: find out what Cannondale stands for, which technology defines the bikes and which models you can find in our shop.
The history of Cannondale
Cannondale was founded in Connecticut in 1971. The brand owes its name to a nearby railway station. It started out with backpacks, bags and bike trailers; the first bicycle frame followed in 1983.
That frame was made of aluminium, with strikingly fat tubes. At the time almost every manufacturer built with steel, and Cannondale became a pioneer of aluminium frames. Carbon, the single-sided Lefty fork and models such as the SuperSix EVO, Habit and Topstone followed, which are still among the best-known bikes in their class.
Technology that defines Cannondale
CAAD aluminium
Cannondale shapes aluminium tubes to be light, stiff and still comfortable. The CAAD14 and Topstone CAAD show how close aluminium can get to carbon.
Lefty
The suspension fork with a single leg is Cannondale's signature. It is light, very stiff and makes wheel changes easy. On the Topstone CAAD Lefty it soaks up impacts on gravel.
Kingpin
On the Topstone Carbon, a pivot sits in the seat tube. This lets the rear end flex slightly and provides comfort and traction on rough roads, without a shock.
SAVE
Specially shaped tubes and seat stays give under impacts. The frame filters vibrations but stays stiff when pedalling. Found for example on the Synapse and SuperSix EVO.
